AUSTRALIAN OF THE YEAR IN THE UK
Australia Day Foundation Director, Bill Muirhead AM said: Germaine remains a passionate advocate for liberty – especially for women. She’s quick witted and outspoken. She’s a unique Australian character. She’s a true pioneer. Her work in the arts and as an academic is also matched by her work as a conservationist. Perhaps surprisingly, the older you get, the more you agree with what she said when she was young. She was way ahead of her time. There are so many brilliant quotes that it’s difficult to choose one. My personal favourite is this - ‘The essence of pleasure is spontaneity’. But I also love ‘You’re only young once, but you can be immature forever’. She is an extraordinary woman, who has played a pivotal role in the history of social change and women’s liberation in the world. On behalf of the Australian Day Foundation, I’m delighted to announce that Professor Germaine Greer is the recipient of the ‘2018 Australian of the Year in the UK’ award.
HONORARY AUSTRALIAN OF THE YEAR IN THE UK
When presenting the award, Australia Day Foundation Director, Dick Porter said: Mike Gooley has a career worth celebrating. A true professional, he is recognised as a business leader and role model to all areas of the travel industry. Over the last 47 years he has helped millions of people realise their dream of discovery our magnificent land Down Under. His company Trailfinders last year for example sent around 70,000 high value travellers – the ones who spend the most – out of a total from the UK of all travellers to Australia of around 720,000. He has for almost 50 years been the standout quality benchmark for the industry and has provided true leadership in excellence of presentation and delivery – to the enormous benefit of Australia, and I say that as a long term competitor following him through it all! On top of this, Mike continues to work tirelessly for The Mike Gooley Trailfinders Charity, over the years donating tens of millions of pounds towards great causes including cancer and other medical research, military veterans and local community projects. In recognition of his outstanding contribution to the Australian Tourism Industry as well as his remarkable philanthropy work, the Australia Day Foundation considers Mike Gooley a truly worthy recipient of the 2018 Honorary Australian of the Year in the UK award.
YOUNG AUSTRALIAN ACHIEVER OF THE YEAR
IN THE UK
When presenting the award, Australia Day Foundation Director, Chris Hickey said: “The video you have just watched only scratches the surface of Dr Geordan Shannon’s amazing achievements. An advocate for remote and rural health, what she has already accomplished in her career indicates that nothing is impossible for Geordan. She didn’t choose to work in rural health for the credit or glory, but because of a genuine passion to improve the lives of those less fortunate. Geordan’s contribution to the health of those in the developing world is truly admirable. The Australia Day Foundation has great pleasure in recognising Dr Geordan’s outstanding work by awarding her as the 2018 Young Australian Achiever of the Year in the UK.”
